Scrambles
A Scramble is a short route to and from a specific destination, without a marked or defined path. You have to plan your own way there and back.
Be sure of your footing and your capabilities. Scrambles are steep, rocky, and slippery. You'll need concentration and extra effort to make the ascent and descent safely. At times, you may need to crawl.
Scrambles will award you with unique observations and a sense of accomplishment.
You'll find two Scrambles on the Cakewalk Trail. They are 'The Keep', and 'Crystal Falls'. Each scramble is marked with a sign on the trail.
The Keep: This steep, 100-yard ascent has twists and turns among a jumble of boulders, and ends at a massive, cave-like rock overhang. Watch out for loose rocks and hidden holes.
Crystal Falls: This rocky climb runs along Crystal Brook to the base of Crystal Falls. It's about 100 yards to the falls. Depending on the amount of rain and the time of year, the falls may be a trickle, a torrent, or a massive wall of ice. The route may be slippery, so watch your step.
